Half past three, and the great hall is nearly empty. At the last poker table sits a lone man, turning a card between his fingers and smiling like someone who already knows how the game ends. Before him stands a glass of aged cognac he hasn't touched all night, as if saving it for a toast whose moment hasn't come.

The game
You sit across from him. He deals faster than the eye can follow, and every flick of his wrist releases a warm breath of cinnamon, as if his sleeves had just left an old kitchen. You win the first round, then the second, and he laughs each time… yet you can't shake the feeling that you are losing.

The last card
On the final round he leaves a card face down beside a small box of sugared pralines, and walks away. You turn the card: the ace, and on its back in his handwriting, "I was playing you from the moment you walked in." You eat one of the sweets to steady yourself, and its taste reminds you that the best losses are the ones you never feel.
